CLASS INFORMATION
TOPICS COVERED – piano as a reference tool, note identification, grand staff, clefs, intervals, major & minor keys and scales, modes, melody construction, meter, triads & 7th chords, inversions, non-diatonic chords, 4 part harmony, syncopation, modulation, basic counterpoint, instrument transposition, harmonic analysis, rhythmic/melodic/harmonic/dictation..
COURSE OBJECTIVE
Theory focuses on the musical tools, concepts, and skills necessary to read, write, understand, and perform music. During the Fall semester, students develop and refine fundamental musical skills and concepts. The Spring semester centers on the successful application of these skills in various musical contexts.

ABSENTEEISM
NYC Dept. of Education - excused absences
Leaving early for vacation - NO
New York State Law states that in order for a student to receive high school credit for a course, he or she cannot miss more than 10% of class meetings per semester. 90 days per semester 10% = 9 absences maximum!
Makeup work due to an excused absence - Make-up assignments will only be accepted if a student has an excused absence/illness. A student has the number of days equal to the number of days absent/ill to make up the work for full credit.
All excused notes must be presented at the beginning of class on the day the student returns to school, not weeks later.
Class Participation grade
Students who arrive on time and are prepared to work.
Students can earn up to 20 points per day for punctuality and work ethic
If you are late you lose 10 points
If you act out (behavior) you lose 5 points per instance
Quiz & Exam Makeup
Cutting a quiz or text/exam will result in a zero for that quiz or test.
Failure to perform in a concert or final culminating performance without an excused absence will result in a failing grade.
Homework (15%) Turn in your work at the beginning of class on the due date! Give your completed homework to another student in your class to hand in for you on the due date or place it in my mailbox (Room 230) before it's due. Teacher names are above their mailbox!
Homework policy - Late homework
1 day 80%
2 days 50%
After the second day it will not be accepted
The assignment must be turned in the format that it was requested (digital or hard copy) at the beginning in the period on the day it was due.
Quizzes (35%) Every other Thursday on the current unit of study.
Exams (20%) Two per semester , Mid-Term & Final Exam. Will contain all topics covered by that point. Ear-training and written theory.
Tutoring – Room A29
Have a class partner that you can depend on for information when you are absent and/or tutoring when needed. Many music students also volunteer to tutor during free periods as well. Ask around!
Class Performances
Students are encouraged to perform on occasional Fridays as assigned by Mr. B! These count as a participation grade for extra-credit and can definitely boost your average! Requirements are to select a 3 minute piece or a 3 minute portion of a larger work, prepare and perform for the class. Performances grades are based on the following: Material/Preparation/Delivery MPD! Speak to Mr. Blancq in class if you would like to sign up!
