Senior Jazz Monthly Reports
Guidelines
Transcribing Method: When transcribing, follow these steps for maximum benefit. Transcribing solos can take a lot of time so please plan accordingly with deadlines. Each solo you transcribe should get a little easier than the previous one but don't expect miracles. Learn how to be diligent and patient!
Transcribe by playing! DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING DOWN! Memorize each phrase, no matter how short, with all inflections and intricacies as you learn it on your instrument. Gradually (for days and weeks) work your way through until you have the entire example completely memorized. Once you can play the solo convincingly from memory with all inflections, nuances, dynamics, and accurate rhythms, THEN practice it at different tempos. This may seem challenging at first, but the payoff is well worth it.
Transcription Performances: (3 for the school year/see dates below) One of the three transcriptions must be from a soloist on an instrument that you DO NOT play. The other two must be on your main instrument. You must select from the recordings below. Prepare throughly and over many weeks so you are completely solid for your class performance!
Written Reports: These will only be accepted on dates that are not transcriptions.
(see dates below) To receive credit, you must submit at least one double spaced typed page or a hand written single spaced page containing commentary on your current musical activities & experiences. THIS FORMAT MUST BE FOLLOWED TO RECEIVE CREDIT! Papers containing any deviation will be returned with a grade of zero. Examples of topics include but are not limited to: outside ensembles, private lessons, concerts, recordings, influences, discoveries, etc.
Late Monthly Report Policy:
1 day 80%
2 days 50%
After the second day it will not be accepted. You will not receive Late HW reminders!
Please Note: Any multiple page reports must be stapled by you before handing in. I will not accept loose sheets whether “dog-eared”, folded or paper-clipped. Hand written reports must be on looseleaf. I WILL NOT ACCEPT NOTEBOOK TEAROUTS. ALSO, I CAN NO LONGER ACCEPT ANY MONTHLY REPORTS THROUGH EMAIL, TEXT, GOOGLE DOCS, etc. Thank you for your cooperation!
