SELECTED SOLOS FOR TRANSCRIPTION
The recordings below are sorted by instrument and only contain the actual solo. It is your responsibility to do the following: 1) find the original album and track and learn the melody and changes before you start transcribing! 2) get to know the soloist's style and personality on a more global level by checking out other albums and tracks. You have an abundance of resources to do so. I have carefully selected these particular improvisations based on their artistic merit, not the popularity of the artist, album, or tune. Some of these musicians are fairly obscure. Determining factors for selection include tone quality, rhythmic feel, melodic and rhythmic vocabulary, harmonic sophistication, and transferable educational content of the jazz vernacular. This collection does not pretend to be complete. Such a task would not be possible here.
Choose a solo that challenges you but is realistic in the allotted time. The solos range the entire spectrum of difficulty. Some solos are very short and fairly simple (less than one minute) and others are rather extensive (two and one-half minutes). Spend some time getting to know each soloist so you can plan out your three selections for the entire year. You must select two solos on your main instrument and one that is not. For transcribing specifics, see Monthly Reports.
